You can just about manage to take a shower and get dressed, why on earth would you add finding time to read into the mix?
Reading is no doubt bottom of your priority list and I get it, it was at mine too. This was a surprise to me as I love reading and thought I’d keep it up no problem after having my little girl. It didn’t happen.
I had to set an intention and find ways to make it as easy as possible to do. No excuses. No complexities. No hang ups.
1. Rekindle your love for the Kindle
An e-reader isn’t for everyone however when it comes to finding time to read it became my companion as a busy mum. It was perfect for when breastfeeding in the early hours of the morning. I had no excuse that I couldn’t have a light on in case it woke her so why not use a kindle and read on the go in those downtime moments.
2. Set a timer
Time boxing is good enough for productivity at work so why not use it for reading. It gives a sense of achievement and doesn’t have to be a scary commitment. Start with 10 minutes and gradually increase. This can be best when going to bed with the added benefit of helping you to fall asleep.
3. Read whatever you fancy
This might sound like a strange one but stay with me here. You can easily get caught up with the trending novels or nonfiction books but as a busy mum, you don’t need feel that you must keep up. You can read a rom com or even a book on infant sleep. Whatever you fancy means you’re not trying to impress and if that means you’ll actually read it then do it.
4. Keep it short
If you are really struggling with reading then change the length of books you pick. Be intentional and only choose short reads such as short stories, novellas, anything less than 200 pages.
5. Listen to it
Audio books are incredible for on the go. Why not enjoy your book in this format instead. You still get the benefits of reading such as escapism, relaxation, new knowledge but you can do it whilst washing up, on a walk or taking a bath.
Are you managing to read still? How do you try and find time to do it?
